A Friar’s Head Wedding in Riverhead
A few weeks ago, my husband’s uncle got married in Riverhead, Long Island. The days leading up to the wedding was exciting, especially the day before when we all arrived at the cottages at Friar’s Head, an exclusive private country club. The club is magnificent. It reminded me of Batman’s mansion or shall I say, Bruce Wayne’s mansion.
The cottages were also pretty awesome. They had four bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and den. The beds were like clouds and the sheets, well, there is definitely something about an 800 count sheet vs. a 200 count sheet!
My husband’s family stayed in one cottage, while his cousin’s family stayed in the other.
The wedding took place outside in a tent. The problem, the hurricane that hit Florida and the Carolina’s also gave us in New York a little bit of bad weather to say the least. The wind was howling and the rain kicked it up a notch. If you blew dried your hair, by the time you go inside the wedding, it was a complete ball of frizz!
The tent was blowing. I was, at times, a bit nervous to be inside it. At one point, the staff had to get a ladder and tie down the top. It was that windy!
So as the wind blew the tent, the 10+ piece band rocked the house. They played a ton of oldies but goodies and got everyone on the dance floor, including the bride’s disabled father who was pushed out at one point and spun around in his wheelchair.
The actual wedding ceremony was beautiful. They had one of our uncle’s friends officiate the wedding. It was very lovely. They had the ceremony in the actual room where the celebration was going on. They had a small stage and the bride’s children held the huppa.
The food was also incredible. There were about a 100 people, maybe less, at the party and every dish came out with perfection.
My highlight was when our cousin’s daughter was dancing. She is three years old and this was the first time my husband and I met her. What a character! She was dancing up a storm and flirting with every camera in the room.
Unfortunately, the stage wasn’t picked up after the ceremony and when our aunt was dancing, she fell and hit her nose and cut up her leg. That was a little scary. Although a lot of blood was on her gorgeous white suit, she was okay after my brother-in-law came the the rescue and fixed her up.
The evening ended with one of the male guests asking our “straight” cousin to dance. As I gave him a wink, he said to me, “I’m secure enough in my manhood to dance with a guy.” I laughed and thought, “right on!”
